Wall and Room Decorations for Your Baby

By: Jessica Landry

Can newborns and toddlers possibly remember how their parents decorated their rooms, once they have reached adult hood. I have my doubts but I certainly wish so. I can state unequivocably that if you give a teenager a room decorated for an infant, that teen will remember that room for the rest of their lives. This is how my bedroom looked at the age of twelve, and all the way to when I was fifteen. We finally moved a few months before I turned sixteen. At the time that I am describing During the year following 1963.
In my family it did not matter what you did my parents would not re-decorate my room unless it was their idea.
The room I lived in for three years and seven months had been lovingly decorated for a little baby boy who was probably born right after the Second World War or thereabouts. The paint on the walls was a pale green similar to the color found in hospitals. Along one wall (most likely the location of the infant's crib, I shuddered always to think), was a peeling border with a faded choo-choo train design. The hat worn by the locomotive's conductor was inscribed in French with words I had memorized. I always thought of them during my French class, when I was in school. I put the desk in this corner of the room because of the room layout. (about the size of an average baby cirb, that was what my desk was). The wallpaper with the smiling conductor and brown train lasted far beyond my childhood into my young adult life. He had a red kerchief tied round his throat and wore some kind of striped blue uniform. Is it possible that brat can remember the room as clear as I do? Once again, I do not think so.
The window frames of the two large windows in the room were painted red - a horrible, orange-red that clashed with the sickly green walls. But they did match the curtains. I will always be thankful that those curtains were so faded, and even ripped in a couple of places, that I didn’t have to live with them for very long. I am not sure of the name of the game the boy on the fabric was playing, he was wearing blue sailor suits, knee-high socks and running behind a wheel while holding a stick. I hope they made the baby boy in his crib smile or fall asleep right away or something becuase the little boys were also all grinning as madly as the train-conductor. I actually felt like slapping them.
I came home one afternoon and the curtains were gone. My mother got rid of them. She had them replaced with curtains that weren’t ripped or faded. I believe the material consisted of green and white stripes I remember the firsts set of curtains in the baby room better than I remember their replacements.
At the time that I had kids of my own years ago, I never decorated their bedrooms. I waited until they were old enough to tell me how they would like the room to look, which didn’t work out too well either because my two sons shared a room. But I did listen to them. The Year Six decided that they wanted to have bright red walls. (the colors associated with his favorite soccer team). Near his bed he had a large red wall. The boy, 11, asked for orange walls decorated with posters of professional basketball players. (I think it was the Utah Jazz). He received an orange-colored wall and poster pictures. White was the original color of the two walls that remain. Even though it was the ugliest I've ever seen, the boys loved their room and entertaining their buddies in it.
